After A Normal Night, A Showdown Looms

It was a ho-hum type of night in the area before a Friday Night that has a showdown between two teams that meet to stay in the NBL Boys race. THURSDAY RESULTS SCL BOYS No. 1 Windsor (18-3, 7-0)…BYE No. 5 Analy 65 El Molino 37 Casa Grande 68 Petaluma 50 Healdsburg 46 Sonoma Valley 43 Moving one game closer to what looks like a showdown for the league championship between Windsor and Analy. Windsor has three games and Analy has two before they meet in Windsor on February 7th. Analy, led by Mohannad Halaweh with 17 points, had another routine win over El Molino. Analy had a 23 point lead by halftime. Casa Grande stayed in yelling distance of the leaders. A 10-0 run in the second quarter gave them control and they went on to beat Petaluma. Scott Mayer scored 16 to lead the way. Mayer, who is averaging 8.4 a game, has scored in double figures six of the last seven games. Healdsburg had the big win of the night holding off Sonoma Valley in an important game for the last spot for a SCL Post Season Tournament berth. Wednesday Recap: Casa Grande Girls Win Number 20

The unpredictability of the NBL Boys race takes a night off and it has been all but assured the SCL Girls will have a new champion. WEDNESDAY RESULTS NBL BOYS No. 2 Montgomery 61 Elsie Allen 25 No. 3 Maria Carrillo 49 Piner 41 No. 3 Cardinal Newman 58 Ukiah 28 Rancho Cotate 58 Santa Rosa 46 The top four teams met the bottom four and for the first time in the league season since opening night the games went as expected and in three of the four games there wasn’t much suspense. The game that did have some fourth quarter suspense was at Maria Carrillo, where the home team broke away from a tie in the last three minutes to take a win over Piner. The game had more scoring in the fourth quarter then it did in the first half. Maria Carrillo led most of the way until Piner tied the game 31-31 with three minutes left. Maria Carrillo outscored them 18-10 down the stretch to avoid the upset. John Aitchison and Brian Johnson each scored 14 points to lead the Puma scoring attack. Skyler Ramos scored 13 for Piner. Tuesday Recap: Ukiah Pulls Surprise In NBL Girls Race

Something out of the ordinary in the NBL Girls race and Windsor has a game like the No. 1 team they are. NBL GIRLS No. 2 Maria Carrillo 66 Piner 13 No. 3 Santa Rosa 65 Rancho Cotate 58 Montgomery 48 Elsie Allen 8 Ukiah 40 Cardinal Newman 37 This might not be as rare as it seems and it will take some homework to see how rare it is but the NBL Girls had a result that the league hasn’t seen in over two seasons. On January 29th, 2010 Maria Carrillo defeated Ukiah 34-27. That season Ukiah made the NBL post season tournament and Maria Carrillo didn’t. It is the last time in the league that a team that didn’t make the post season tournament beat a team that did. Over the last two seasons and the first half of this season that is 160 games and most of those games have been pretty one sided. That streak was broken with Ukiah’s win over Cardinal Newman. Unless something bizarre happens, one of those two teams goes to the North Bay League postseason tournament, the other will not. Weekly Recap: An Early Look At The NCS Playoffs

This week starts the second half of league play and as teams jockey for league championships, they are also jockeying for a spot in the North Coast Section playoffs. The regional rankings haven’t been kind to the local teams. An example is in the last weekly Chronicle Poll, only one Sonoma County team appeared in either of the Boys or Girls Top 20 and that was the Casa Grande Girls at No. 11. Teams are jockeying for playoff position and here is an overview of the way things look according to the computer rankings. Here are some refresher points to qualify. League champions are automatically in and even if they meet someone who is a high seeded team but not a league champion, they would get a home game. Another way to become eligible is to finish over .500 either overall, in league or against the same division. The most teams any division can have is sixteen. BOYS DIVISION I Santa Rosa is the only team from the area in Division I. For them to be eligible they will have to finish league play 6-1 to finish over the .500 mark. DIVISION II Windsor is the highest ranked team at No. 3 just ahead of No. 4 Maria Carrillo. Montgomery, Rancho ...

Montgomery Takes Over First Place In NBL Boys Race

Another set of games, another change of personality in the NBL race. This change is good for the defending champion Montgomery Vikings. The Monday Night action in the NBL Boys race is the official end of the first half. The second half of the league races start Tuesday Night with the SCL Boys and NBL Girls in action. The NBL Boys and SCL Girls kick off the second half on Wednesday. MONDAY RESULTS NBL BOYS No. 1 Cardinal Newman 66 Elsie Allen 28 Ukiah 48 No. 4 Maria Carrillo 37 Montgomery 54 No. 5 Rancho Cotate 38 Piner 56 Santa Rosa 45 It might be happening for Montgomery a little quicker than expected. The defending champions start three sophomores and yet here they are in first place at the halfway mark. More good news for the Vikings is that senior Karl Nimtz returned after being out along time with an injury. Montgomery breezed past Rancho Cotate and with help from Ukiah, sits in first place. Rancho Cotate never got closer than ten points in the second half. The two senior starters led the Montgomery offense with Brian McCammon scoring 14 and Brian Fuller adding 11. Windsor Boys, Casa Grande Girls Win to Stay in First Place

FIRST OF ALL------GO NINERS, YOU CAN DO THIS It did turn out to be SCL night, as both the Boys and Girls were in action and in both, the first place team kept control of the league race. SCL BOYS No. 2 Windsor 63 Casa Grande 61 Analy 76 Petaluma 45 Windsor has a nine game winning streak and is 18-3 on the season. The difference in the game was the third quarter, when an 8-0 start gave Windsor 12 point lead. It was still 15 in the fourth when Casa Grande made a strong run to end the game. Tanner Giddings led all scorers with 17 points and all rebounders with 11. Vince Valdez added 10 for the Jaquars. Chase Stafford had a season equaling high 25 points to help keep Casa Grande close. The defending SCL champions have now lost three straight and are 11-9 on the season. Casa Grande had a different kind of second of half. Trailing at halftime 32-28, they were held to five points in the third quarter, which equals a season low for a quarter.
