Football Championship Weekend Schedule—Numbers

by / Friday, 06 December 2013 / Published in News

Three of the four NCS Football Championship games are undefeated No. 1 seeds vs. No. 3.  The numbers over the last few years favor the No. 1 seed, except in one division.

Since 2008 the No. 1 seed is 8-1 vs. a No. 3 and if they are undefeated they have won two of three.

The No. 1 seed has been in twenty of the twenty five championship games and are 17-3 overall.

Seven of them have been undefeated and they are 5-2.

This is the third time since 2007 that these two teams have met for the title.  De La Salle won 37-0 in 2007 and 49-21 in 2010.

De La Salle is a big favorite to get its 23rd straight section title.

This is the division the numbers don’t favor the undefeated No. 1 seed.

The No. 1 seed hasn’t won the championship in the Division since Encinal in 2008.

In two of the last four seasons Marin Catholic has won the championship by defeating the No. 1 seed.

The other two years they were the No. 1 seed and didn’t get the championship.

Last year El Cerrito was the undefeated No. 1 seed and lost to Marin Catholic 31-28 in the championship game.

DIVISION 4—SATURDAY AT HUMBOLDT STATE…1 PM

No. 2 Fortuna (10-2) vs. No. 5 St. Mary’s (9-4)

This is the first time since this format began in 2008 that the No. 1 seed won’t win the championship in this Division.

This is the second time a No. 5 has made the championship in any Division.  The first time was last Friday in Division 5 when No. 5 Salesian beat No. 2 Valley Christian.

It is also the only one of the four games the Cal Preps Projection has the lower seed as favorite.
