FRIDAY MORNING TOP FIVE
The local teams had a little better luck in tournament play than they did last weekend.
No. 5…Home Opener
The Santa Rosa Girls, the defending NBL champions and this year favorites, are off to a 4-0 start this season are not in a tournament this weekend but will spend the next two nights playing their first home games.
Tonight the Panthers will host San Ramon Valley of Danville and tomorrow night they meet Novato.
San Ramon Valley is a Division 1 school and is 5-1 on the season.
No. 4…North Bay Takes Three of Four
It’s called the North Bay-East Bay Challenge and its being played at Acalanes High School in the East Bay. In Round One three North Bay League teams won and advanced to the Semi-Finals.
At 6:30 Maria Carrillo meets California and at 8 pm a preview of the NBL race when Casa Grande meets Windsor.
Casa Grande and Windsor have started the season a combined 8-2.
No. 3…Good Start for NBL Boy teams on Road
Montgomery and Ukiah moved into the winner bracket in tournaments.
Montgomery raised its record to 3-1 with and easy 76-33 win over Jesse Bethel in the first round of the Roy Ghiggeri Invitation at Freedom High School. Montgomery jumped out to a double digit first quarter lead and was never threatened.
Montgomery will meet Oakland Tech at 7 pm today in the semifinal.
The other semi-final game is between Laguna Creek and Freedom.
That tournament is in the East Bay.
Way up north in the Logger Classic in Eureka, Ukiah pulled away in the fourth quarter and defeated Mt. Diablo 73-51. It was a four point game going into the fourth quarter.
Ukiah is 7-2 on the season and they will meet Fortuna in the Semi-Final tonight. The other Semi-Final game is between Eureka and Arcata.
No. 2…Kris Kringle First Round
The SRJC Men Basketball team had one of its best games of the season with a 101-62 win over Shasta. It was the first time that the Bear Cubs has hit the 100 point mark this season.
SRJC was on fire from three point range hitting 20 of 32 shots, led by Alec Kobre who hit six on his way to a game high of 22 points..
The SRJC win changed the pattern of three close games that started the tournament. The first three games had a combined difference of 11 points with the most one sided game being a 93-87 win by Yuba over Feather River.
SRJC will meet No. 10 Los Medanos in the second round tonight. Tip-off is at 8 pm.
The other semi-final game is between Marin and Yuba which starts at 6 pm. The day of basketball starts at 2 pm with the first of two consolation games.
No. 1…Callan Memorial Tournament
The tournament started out like the Rose City last week with the local teams losing the first two games. It ended up a .500 night and sets up what would have been a super football matchup this season between Analy and Casa Grande in the second round.
Both teams had nice leads by halftime and weren’t threatened in the second half.
Analy is 5-2 on the season while Casa Grande is 4-2. The two old SCL foes will meet at 8 pm.
The other Semi-Final game is between Las Lomas and Fairfield which tips at 6:30.
The card starts at 3:30 with a Consolation Semi Final between Petaluma and Windsor.
