Long Beach Takes First Week Lead In Calif. CC Football Poll

by / Tuesday, 06 September 2016 / Published in News

San Mateo (Sept. 5, 2016) – Long Beach City College is the first week state leader in the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll of California Community College football coaches. Preseason No. 1 and defending California Community College Athletic Association state champion City College of San Francisco fell at crossbay rival Laney, 18-13, in a state opener — ending the Rams’ nine-game winning streak and dropping them to No. 12 this week. Laney joined the top 25 in the ninth position.
Long Beach started the campaign with a 42-14 victory over visiting Pasadena. This week the Vikings will visit 2015 state runner-up and currently No. 3 Saddleback. That’s one of three SoCal showdowns among top ten teams Saturday that will revise the rankings again next week. No. 2 Riverside visits No. 8 Golden West and No. 5 Mt. San Antonio takes its now state-leading seven-game winning streak to No. 7 Ventura.
No. 4 American River, now Northern California’s top team, hosts No. 13 Modesto on Saturday (at Cosumnes River College) — while No. 6 Santa Rosa plays at No. 10 Fresno. There’s also a top match-up of American Division teams with Hartnell at Shasta. Most September games are non-conference.
